‌War Songs

The premise of this story is that few things, in the vast and sorrowful world, are as heartrending as the songs of the Italian mountain infantry, the Alpini. Whosoever doesn’t feel the same way is free to read no further.

Of all those songs—which in my mother’s inspired voice accompanied my entire childhood, often taking the place of lullabies or fairy tales—one in particular had and continues to have for me a supremely saddening power: I’m referring to the sweet and sublime epic-lyric “Monte Canino,” about which my spirit nevertheless does not know how to write, as though its superhuman beauty placed it beyond all commentary. From so much emotional devastation, may there now reappear, in homage to bygone days, only the musicless words:

Do you remember, April was the month,

That long train ride toward the front

Carrying with it thousands of Alpini:
